When should I call my doctor?

If you feel you have a life-threatening medical emergency, call 911.

PLEASE REMEMBER- WE RESERVE AFTER HOURS PHONE CALLS FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY (after 5pm Mon-Fri./all day Sat and Sun). If you are requesting a call back from us, please make sure your phone will accept a "blocked" call. Please have the phone number of your pharmacy available, and make sure they are open if it is after hours.

What is NOT an emergency?

• I have a cold, what can I take? See the information sheet.
• I want to travel, can I go? Ask at your next visit (did you forget? Call during the day).
• My son has a cold/fever what should I do? Childhood illnesses do not affect your pregnancy. Please read the section on Chicken Pox. If your child has Parvovirus (Slapped Cheeks Disease) please call us during office hours.
• I need my medication refilled. Call during office hours.
• I'm spotting after I just had intercourse. This is normal- don't have intercourse for a couple days.
• I'm having painless spotting. Call during the day.
• I want my test results. They will be reviewed with you at your next appointment.
• I want to discuss my test results. They will be discussed with you at your next appointment.
• I have a herpes outbreak. Call during office hours if you are 35 weeks or more.
• I think I have a yeast infection. Use an over the counter anti-fungal preparation and make an appointment if symptoms are not improved or gone in 3 days.

What is an emergency (ie- reason to call in the middle of the night)?

• Bleeding other than spotting.
• Pain that lasts longer than 20 minutes.
• Pain that hurts so much you can't even talk.
• Regular contractions before you are 36 weeks (please call the hospital and go in for monitoring).
• Fluid leaking from your vagina before you are 36 weeks (please call the hospital and go in for monitoring).
• Decreased fetal movement (lie down, drink a large glass of ice cold juice and if you do not get 7-10 movements in the next hour- please call the hospital and go in for monitoring).

What is a reason to call after hours?

• I have never had chicken pox and I just found out I was exposed (this isn't really an emergency, but the earlier we deal with it, the better).
• I have a fever higher than 100.5 degrees (if you have a cold, this is normal- take Tylenol. If not, call us).
